Here we have the American Model DR332 Vintage Microphone.  It was made by the American Microphone Company of Pasadena in 1950.  They called it the "Full Vision" mike to basically compete with the RCA 77 series and the Altec/Western Electric 639. The latter two mics were so large that they obscured the performer's face while the compact DR332 measuring only 6 x 2 inches allowed 'full vision" of the actor's face. It has both a ribbon and a dynamic element in it which allows a cardioid polar pattern.

There were three similar microphones offered concurrently by American, the DR330, R331 and the DR332.  The R331 was a ribbon having a figure-8 pattern and it listed at $75.00.  The DR332 (this item) had an additional dynamic capsule in it, giving it a unidirectional, cardioid response pattern.  The DR330 had a switch selectable pattern, and much wider frequency response.  The DR330 listed at $250.00 in 1950 which was quite expensive back then. All of these had an identical appearance.  All external parts are anodized aluminum.  They used to be black but with oxidation they actually have a purplish hue now. The nameplate could be removed on the DR332 to gain access to impedance selection links [while in the DR330, one could also switch patterns].

"The American DR332 Ribbon Mic makes everything sound deep and old."  It is excellent excellent for vocals and acoustic guitar, especially in a setting where poor ambiance or bleed is a problem with it's directionality.

This mike has been tested and functions well. It is in good condition with only a few minor scratches. It accepts an XLR cable and appears to be balanced and it supports standard coupling to a mount. The Lock Latch is in good shape.
