Offered today is one Vintage Hammond M-100 Nuvistor Condenser Small Diaphragm Microphone. I believe it to be from the 1960s. I purchased it from a vendor in the UK. It had a strange power plug which I removed some time ago with intentions of testing it but I never got around to it. When I bought it, it was described as working. It requires a 220V connection. It is untested and sold as is. There appears to be a second capsule provided. The power supply has a leather (?) exterior.
This was the original description when I purchased it:
This auction is for one Hammond M-100 Nuvistor Condenser (Capacitor) Microphone with type SU-2 Power Supply.
Description: This unit was manufactured circa 1965 by CE Hammond and Co. Ltd. The Microphone itself measures 3.75" x 0.75". It has an omnidirectional characteristic and the frequency response is virtually flat from 20hz-20,000hz. The microphone capsule encloses a linear amplifier built around a RCA Triode Nuvistor type 6CW4. The asymmetrical cathode follower circuit has an output impedance of 60 ohms. The Nuvistor has a life expectancy of 100,000 hrs.
Supply voltages are provided by a local power supply. HT is controlled by a cold cathode valve type OB2. The 6.3volt, 130ma LT for the Nuvistor filament heater is stabilised to withstand input voltage variations of up to 15%. This stabiliser circuit outputs through an OC25 Germanium power transistor.
At one end of the power supply unit is an "Undulene" flap that encloses a standard three-pin XLR plug. This is an unbalanced output wired Pin 1 = O/C, Pin 2 = Screen, Pin 3 = Signal. At the other end of the power supply unit is another "Undulene" flap that encloses a mains switch (inward facing = Off) and two neon indicators. The upper neon illuminates when mains is present. The lower one illuminates when transformer HT is present. The green low voltage lamp, which is under the handle of the unit, illuminates when the Nuvistor filament voltage is present.
The microphone and power supply both work but the XLR connection to the microphone is intermittent. To work reliably, the 5 pin Canon XLR (socket) presently fitted needs to be exchanged for a Switchcraft or other type of XLR that has a more accurately machined barrel because the Cannon is slightly too tight. The power supply could do with a good overhaul. The mains connections to the switch need to be insulated and at least one electrolytic capacitor is showing signs of corrosion. None of this would be a problem for a competent electronics technician. Mains input currently has an inline five amp three-pin plug fitted.
A spare condenser capsule and 5 pin XLR plug insert (microphone end) will be included.
Cosmetic Condition: Both the Microphone and the Power Supply are in good cosmetic condition except for the top and ends of the power supply that are covered by a material that has stretched and acquired a wavy profile over time. The composition of the material is unknown. It looks like rubberised linoleum. "Undulene" would be a good name for it now.
The only postal option offered is the United States Postal Service, Priority or Express mail.
International postage will likewise be provided solely by the USPS but surface mail options are not provided as the delay in delivery often results in disputes and anxiety on both ends. For all international orders using Express Mail, the buyer must supply a phone number.
