This Model W1248 Webster Chicago Univel Vintage Ribbon microphone is beautiful. The Serial Number is 92166 and this was manufactured in the 1930's. This another example of an Art Deco microphone. The mike is about the same size as the RCA 77DX, 4 x 2.5 x 6.5 " and it displays nicely. You will note that the bakelite body is lustrous and pristine (I will include one of my top secret wipes which restores bakelite ;)).
There are two varieties of this microphone and two different companies on the label. There is the Univel (this one) and the Duovel, one and 2 ribbons respectively. Webster-Chicago and Rauland are the companies. This is really a museum piece as it is quite rare and splendid. I have seen these float through eBay in the past and it is rare to have the bakelite body completely intact as in this one.
The cable is not there and I was unable to assess function. I removed the base, hoping to get a peek at the ribbon but I wasn't able to figure out how to open it further and I didn't want to tempt fate. I strongly suspect that this mike is fully functional as the condition is so good.
This particular mike was licensed by Electrical Research Products (see below) and designated "for use only in public address systems."
The yolk is also quite novel with the three pronged chrome assembly. There is some minor cracking in the metal at the base but not on the body of the microphone. It still seems quite sturdy as this is not the threaded attachment to the stand but behind it. The stand is included and is a vintage Universal Microphone variety.
